Kitchen Remodel 6: Cabinets

The cabinets were installed yesterday. We think they look pretty good:

That light fixture ended up looking great in that space.

As is common with projects like this, every big step forward comes with a small step backwards. These cabinets are wider than our old ones, so the cabinet doors are wider as well. As a result, the doors stick out deeper into the room. A little too deep in fact:

I spent last night relocating the old junction box 6 inches deeper into the room, reinstalling the fan, and mudding over the old hole:

It’s funny, though; one of my regrets was that we didn’t center the fan in the middle of the room when I was resurfacing the ceiling. Now it’s centered and it looks better.

Our measurement for the range hood was also a little off, so I had to fill that hole as well. And since we had the mud out and were going to make a mess anyway…

To recap, here’s where we are in regards to the plan:

  1. Disassemble the dining room table and take it to the garage
  2. Move all the appliances into the dining room
  3. Relocate the hot water heater to the crawl space
  4. Demo the existing cabinets and the rear closet walls
  5. Remove the tile floor
  6. Resurface the ceiling
  7. Lay a new subfloor
  8. Center the oven plug and add new outlets
  9. Re-frame the rear wall
  10. Move the dryer vent
  11. Sheetrock/mud the rear wall
  12. Repair and paint the walls
  13. Tile the floors
  14. Install cabinets and counter tops
  15. Move all the appliances back into the kitchen

I keep reassuring myself that someday the mudwork will be done. Now, if I can get the base and shoe molding installed tonight, we can move the range and fridge back into the kitchen and put our dining room table back together. That will really make us feel like we’re progressing.
