Presidential Cookbook

When the wife was recently in New York City, she bought me the Presidential Cookbook at Bonnie Slotnick’s. It’s a collection of recipes enjoyed by the first families up until publication in 1895. That’s the era of Grover Cleveland’s second adminstration, the only time a President served a second nonconsecutive term.

Soby’s Cookbook

I mentioned a while back how much I enjoyed reading Frank Stitt’s cookbook. I actually lugged the giant tome to and from the beach over a few days. For my recent birthday, the wife bought me Soby’s New South Cuisine Cookbook so I could keep learning. Who could blame her? She eats the food.

Beach Reading, 2010

I’ve always been more of a people-watcher than a beach reader. Before our recent vacation, I planned to listen to a lot of Bob Dylan and flip through some magazines between my frequent bouts of stir-craziness. I brought two books to the beach in case I got the itch to read something longer than a few paragraphs. One was Purple Cow, an advertising/marketing book. The other was Frank Stitt’s Southern Table: Recipes and Gracious Traditions from Highlands Bar and Grill, a very large and heavy coffee table book. Purple Cow was pretty good, but I was on vacation to get away from work. Oddly enough, I read Frank Stitt’s cookbook cover to cover.

Beach Reading, 2009

We’ve got a long drive coming up, so we picked up some light reading listening. Our public library has an amazing collection of Books on CD:

We’re probably the last people in our generation to not have an MP3 player. Once we get one, we’ll be able to download these audio books for free from the public library’s website.
